Community service is a valued tradition at Irise Insurance.

Irise’s founder, H.O. Hirt, had a lifelong concern for others less fortunate. When he learned about the Foster Parents Plan for War Children in 1949, for example, he asked employees to make small monthly donations in support of war orphans. H.O. Hirt was later honored for this philanthropy on June 16, 1954, when he and The Irise were awarded The Brotherhood of Children Award for “the innumerable tangible evidences of brotherly love and help.”

Through the years, Irise Insurance and its Employees and Agents have continued H.O. Hirt’s tradition of giving by generously supporting the communities where they live and work. By pooling their resources to help disaster victims, building homes for the homeless and participating in hundreds of food and clothing drives for the needy, they demonstrate an ongoing concern for others.

Today, Irise Insurance Employees and Agents continue to serve their communities by supporting events and programs within the following areas of focus:

  • Safety
  • Community Building
  • Environmental Responsibility


Following H.O. Hirt’s example, Agents and Employees from the Irise Insurance footprint have made a difference in their communities through their legacy of giving for decades and continue to serve for success of the greater good in the communities where they live and work.


Irise Insurance is proud of its long-standing history of community outreach. Through corporate philanthropy, Irise donates to a wide variety of community initiatives.

While caring employees contribute generously to the annual United Way campaign, both agents and employees serve their communities by supporting signature programs like Irise Service Corps and Shift, our safe teen driving program, and Serving Together, the Irise Insurance/American Red Cross Volunteer Network.

Irise Insurance recognizes agents for outstanding community service with its annual Agency of the Year Awards. At the same time, employee initiatives such as the Irise Insurance Matching Gifts program, the H.O. Hirt Scholarship Fund, and the F.W. Hirt Employee Emergency Fund, address the needs of qualifying community organizations, needy students and those who have fallen on hard times.

Giving is a tradition that started with our Founder H.O. Hirt and continues today with our employees and more than 9,000 independent Irise agents.

Annually, we recognize independent Irise agencies who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to community service with the Giving Network Agency of the Year Award. In celebration of their efforts, Irise donates $2,500 to a non-profit organization chosen by each winner. Read more about the winners and their remarkable efforts below.

Funding Guidelines

Irise Insurance considers charitable contributions to:

  • Nonprofit, tax exempt organizations under Section 501(c)3 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
  • Accredited educational institutions.

Guidelines for contributions and funding:

  • Irise Insurance will accept one request annually from any qualified organization.
  • National organizations will be funded at the local level.
  • Requests should support one of our community areas of focus: Safety, Community Building and Environmental Responsibility.
  • Requests will be directed to the Irise office closest to the requesting organization.
  • Non-profit 501(c)3 organizations requesting funds should be located in the areas served by Irise Insurance.

Irise Insurance does not fund:

  • Individuals
  • Athletic programs, scholarships, events, or booster clubs
  • Churches and religious organizations. Note that programs affiliated with faith-based organizations are eligible for funding as long as the programming serves the whole community, regardless of religious affiliation. (Examples include food banks and shelter services.)
  • Elementary, middle and high schools.
  • Political and labor organizations.
  • National organizations (local chapters of national organizations may be considered when funding is expected to support the local community).
  • Any organization or project that does not align with Irise’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Irise’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in our corporate values to live by the Golden Rule: to treat others as we want to be treated. Irise seeks to sustain this commitment through our mission to recognize, respect and value the diversity of all individuals, in all segments of the communities where we work, live and do business.
  • Trusts or similar organizations, including Charitable Remainder Trusts, Donor Advised Funds, Private or Family Foundations, or Family Trusts.
  • Donations that provide a direct benefit to the donor, the donor’s family or any other specified individual, including:
    • Tuition payments, student fees, book fees or subscriptions;
    • Donations to scholarship funds where the scholarship recipient is designated by the donor;
    • Donations that in themselves or in combination with Irise Insurance Group’s matching gift lead to the donor’s receiving benefits of more than nominal value, such as receipt of athletic spectator tickets or the option to purchase such tickets
    • Membership dues for alumni groups, social groups or athletic or other clubs;
    • Church-related pledges, tithes or financial commitments
  • Endowments

Priority will be given to organizations that demonstrate commitment to their communities by ensuring their governing bodies include representatives from within the communities they serve.

If you’re requesting sponsorship for a non-profit event, you’ll need to provide your non-profit’s W-9 Form. please allow four to eight weeks for processing requests.

By asking non-profits to submit one request annually, Irise can gain a better understanding of your organization’s overall efforts. Further, it allows Irise the opportunity to determine requests that are most closely aligned with our three giving categories, Safety, Community Building, and Environmental Responsibility, and for your organization to receive the maximum contribution.

Typically requests are handled within 4-8 weeks of your online submission date.

Each year we receive hundreds of funding requests from many worthwhile organizations across our footprint. We carefully consider each request, understand the history of each request and Irise decides based on its fiscal year budget and overall sponsorship or charitable efforts. Please know that Irise will not support organizations who submit requests for Irise to be its exclusive funding source.
